Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
Respiratory System: A series of organs responsible for taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide. The primary organs of the respiratory system are lungs, which carry out this exchange of gases as we breathe. There are 3 major parts of the respiratory system: the airway, the lungs, and the muscles of respiration. The airway, which includes the nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles, carries air between the lungs and the body's exterior. RSV affects the respiratory system because this virus affects one of the organs of the system: the lungs.

Number of Americans Affected: Each year, 4-5 million children younger than 4 years acquire an RSV infection. Also, each year in the United States, more than 57,000 children younger than 5 years old are hospitalized due to RSV infection, and about 14,000 adults older than 65 years die from it.

How a person's daily life is affected: Infants can become irritable and might not sleep well. Some will have no reaction and will act normal, but some will eat less than normal. Having this infection is similar to having the common cold, so many just deal with the symptoms and go on with daily lives.
Etiology: You can catch RSV if:
- A person with RSV sneezes, coughs, or blows their nose near you
- You touch, kiss, or shake hands with someone who is infected by the virus
- You touch your nose, eyes, or mouth after you have touched something contaminated by the virus, such as a toy or doorknob.
